Call before you come in

Please call 780.452.5700 before arriving at the clinic. Our team will advise you on next steps, how urgently you need to be seen, and any first-aid measures you can take in the meantime. Walk-ins during a dental emergency can create delays for both you and other patients.

What counts as a dental emergency?

If you are unsure whether your situation is a dental emergency, call us and describe your symptoms. Our team can help you decide. Common dental emergencies include:

  • Severe toothache that does not resolve
  • A broken or cracked tooth with a sharp edge or significant pain
  • A lost filling or crown that is causing pain or leaving a sharp surface
  • Swelling of the face, jaw, or gums
  • A suspected abscess (dental infection)
  • Dental injury from an accident or trauma

What to do while you wait

First-aid steps depend on the nature of the emergency. Here is guidance for common situations:

Broken or chipped tooth

  • Rinse your mouth with warm water.
  • Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling.
  • Save any tooth fragments if possible.
  • Call us to arrange prompt assessment.

Lost filling or crown

  • Temporary dental cement, available at most pharmacies, can be used to protect the area until your appointment.
  • Avoid chewing on that side.
  • Call us to schedule repair as soon as possible.

Abscess or facial swelling

  • Do not attempt to lance or drain the area yourself.
  • Call us immediately, dental abscesses can progress and require prompt attention.
  • If swelling is affecting your ability to breathe or swallow, go to the nearest hospital emergency department without delay.

After hours

If you are unable to reach the clinic and you have facial swelling that is affecting your breathing or swallowing, proceed to the nearest hospital emergency department. These symptoms can indicate a spreading infection that requires immediate medical attention.

For non-life-threatening concerns outside of office hours, calling and leaving a message will allow us to follow up as soon as we are available.
